Blog:Freedom under threat?

As with the frog, Hong Kong’s freedoms will evaporate in a cloud of steam, democrats warn.
“I think Hong Kong’s freedoms are under threat all the time,” said Margaret Ng, a pro-democracy legislator who represents Hong Kong’s legal sector
She says constant vigilance is needed in an environment where government control of the media and public life is growing through patronage, financing and the rewarding of pro-Beijing behaviour.
One example she cites is the government’s refusal to prosecute Mrs Grace Mugabe, and her bodyguards, for their reported beating of photographers in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong’s lack of checks and balances on power produces a sense of a lack of fairness, Ms Ng argues - and of helplessness.

Blog:Real unveil Beckham

David Beckham will wear the number 23 shirt at Real Madrid next season.
The England captain was officially unveiled as the La Liga champions’ new £25m signing on Wednesday.
Beckham, who signed a four-year deal wth the Spanish club on Tuesday, was introduced to more than 500 journalists from 25 countries at the club’s basketball stadium.
“Beckham is here because we believe in him as a footballer. David, welcome to the dream league,” Real’s president Florentino Perez said.
The 28-year-old midfielder was handed the Real number 23 shirt by Madrid legend Alfredo di Stefano, the Argentine striker who made the club such a force in the 1950s and 1960s.

Blog:Cuba change

Analysts say there will be little domestic pressure on the Obama administration to make any changes on US drugs policy. Mr Obama has spoken in support of the current Plan Colombia and the US$400m Plan Merida for combating drugs trafficking in Mexico and Central America
However, one area where there will be a small policy shift is towards Cuba. Mr Obama said during the campaign he would lift the Bush administration’s restrictions on family travel to Cuba and on remittances sent back to the island, policies that Cuban-Americans support.
Mr Obama said he would do this “right away” but it is not clear how soon it will happen.

Blog:The disease that stalked Sir Bobby

Former England manager Sir Bobby Robson, who has died at the age of 76, was diagnosed with cancer five times. It is a scenario that most of us - even the one in three of us who develop the disease - are unlikely to face.
Sir Bobby is reported to have responded indignantly when he was first told in 1992 that a “little bit of cancer” in his bowel would take him away from PSV Eindhoven for three months.
It was taken out and the manager got back to business.
The fear for most would be a recurrence of the original cancer, or the news that it might have spread. But three years later, an entirely new form of the disease made an appearance - and a rare one at that.
Malignant melanoma in Sir Bobby’s face was found by a specialist after he had complained about blocked sinuses. A very rare and dangerous form of cancer, he was told he would be “dead by the end of the season” if something was not done straight away.

Blog: More security?

The newspaper reported last week that more than 3,300 items of physical evidence had been collected, including bricks and clubs stained with blood.
The evidence included 91 video clips and 2,169 photographs, it said.
Although security in Urumqi is already high, “a drastic increase in security is expected in the whole city,” the newspaper said, especially around the Urumqi Intermediate People’s Court.
Armed police are already conducting round-the-clock patrols in the area.

Blog:Generals in ’scrap Trident’ call

The UK’s nuclear deterrent should be scrapped, according to a group of retired senior military officers.
Field Marshal Lord Bramall and Generals Lord Ramsbotham and Sir Hugh Beach have denounced Trident as “irrelevant”.
General Lord Ramsbotham told the BBC that the “huge” £20bn expense of renewal has to be questioned and said the armed forces should get more funds.
Supporters say it is still essential that the UK should maintain its independent nuclear arsenal.
Lord Ramsbotham told the BBC’s Newsnight programme: “We argue it is conventional weapons we now need.
“Their pin-point accuracy, their ability to help our forces in the sort of conflicts that are taking place is something which means you have to question the huge expense of Trident, which is limiting what we can do.”
In a letter to the Times, the men say the UK is too dependent on the US when it comes to defence.
